Extra Virgin Coconut Oil or Virgin Coconut Oil? Which One Is Right?

Have you seen any of these at the shelves of your local grocery stores?

The labels highlight differently the oil packaged- unrefined, superfood or cold pressed and organic or non-organic.

Sceptics are doubted this major source of dietary fat especially after an overall misunderstanding of it.

However, another group of people is crazed about coconut oil and its health claims, predominantly in embracing skin and hair issues.

Let’s jump into what these oils are and what really are the benefits of it.

What is Extra Virgin Coconut Oil and Virgin Coconut Oil?

Extra Virgin Coconut Oil (EVCO) is a type of oil that is extracted mechanically pressed from mature coconut flesh.

The process of pressing fresh coconut flesh to milk and oil is called cold pressing- because the pressing occurs without using heat elements.

This process too, involves no chemical processing so the natural nutrients are maintained.

The term ‘virgin’ is used to describe the coconut flesh (or meat) being untreated or raw.

Now you wonder, what is Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO)?

In the case of olive oils, Virgin Olive Oil and Extra Virgin Olive Oil are differently graded.

However, these two named oils (EVCO and VCO) have similar composition making VCO and EVCO indistinguishable.

In other words, VCO is nothing different than EVCO.

Now you can call it EVCO or VCO as you prefer because these terms are legally used interchangeably.

Coconut oil, when at room temperature, is solid in form and is white in colour.

When melted at its melting point of 24 degree Celsius, its liquefied state looks like other ordinary cooking oils.

What are its benefits?

In general, studies have proven that coconut oil is a natural disease combater.

The main active component in coconut oil is lauric acid.

Studies have found that lauric acid produces antimicrobial activities.

Its derivative is monolaurin which is able to penetrate cells and disrupt membranes.

The combination of these two results in anti- inflammatory activity.

With these and other components, coconut oil becomes an excellent moisturizer and antioxidant.

The benefits include:

1. Getting rid of dental plaque and gingivitis through broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Simply gargle the coconut oil to fight dental bacteria.

2.Reducing the seriousness of fungal infections. The anti-inflammatory disposition of the coconut oil helps to avoid weakening of the immune system by fungus.

It boosts your immunity system.

3. Repairing skin. Virgin coconut oil is an antioxidant as well as a wound healing agent. It is believed to be able to treat chronic skin diseases like eczema.

Treating skin by applying this oil with properties of perfect skincare is easy and ensures succession over time.

4. Growing healthy hair. Coconut oil, compared to other oils like sunflower oil and mineral oil penetrates better in the hair shaft.

It is able to fill the gap between hair cells. Thus, it protects hair from damages and the formation of split ends.

5. Reducing body weight. Virgin coconut oil when consumed or incorporated in cooking could help reduce the struggle of losing weight.

This oil assimilates easily in the bloodstream and easy to be broken down so it is not stored in your fat tissue.

It also prevents high blood cholesterol levels.

6. Avoiding cancer. Again, thanks to lauric acid, coconut oil has a great protective activity.

As it boosts body nutrition, energy, and metabolism, coconut oil protects the body from cancers such as breast and colon cancers.

All and all, traditional medicines use virgin coconut oil to treat all sorts of ailments top to toe, in and out.

As good as it is, there are limitations where it is suggested to limit the intake of virgin coconut oil to prevent serious metabolic disorders and to decrease cardiovascular risk.

It should also not be used for deep frying and prolonged cooking at high temperature.

Virgin coconut oil is believed to be able to cure many other ailments but it is yet to be researched.

The question arises: is virgin coconut oil here to stay?

The answer is yes, despite the backlashes, the oil is here to stay with its zero cholesterol level and plentiful amount of lauric acid.
